Police
Academy
The
City and County of Honolulu Police Department needed more officers
but that required a larger facility quickly for trainees. Five 14'
x 60' modules were used in the design of the academy. The exterior
design follows a typical community college campus.
The building
had to withstand heavy contact, so it was designed for increased
floor and wall loads. In addition to academic studies, the
facility is used for martial arts, arrest technique training
and canine training. The framing was insulated to block noise
for an adequate classroom environment in the air-trafficked
area.
The durable
pre-engineered metal roof requires less maintenance than shingles
or EPDM finishes. The facility is an area that is hotter than
normal for Honolulu; to keep heat out and cool air in, wall
framing and insulation was increased.
Caught
off-guard with the sudden need for a larger police force, the County
had not budgeted for the facility. Costly concrete slabs and re-bar
are not necessary in modular construction. The foundation is blocks
with plates that are welded to the chassis and I-beams. This meets
requirements for a permanent structure. The County stayed in budget
without reducing the quality of the building.
